Looking for a cheap car rental option? What if I tell you that there’s a way to rent a car for free. And if you’re really lucky, you may even get paid to drive a car to your vacation. It’s called a driveaway option.
Car rental agencies transfer most of their fleet of cars to areas where the demand for rental cars is high. During the winter, most people go on vacation in places like Florida and other Southern states. And in the spring, they need most of their cars back North. It would cost car rental agencies a lot of money and manpower to transport these cars twice a year. A better option for them is to rent these cars cheaply or for free for travellers going in that direction.
Cheaper than cheap car rental
This ultimate in cheap car rentals is called a driveaway option. A driveaway option is an arrangement where the car rental agency rents out the car for free or hires you to drive the car from one place to another. The only things the driver has to spend on are food, lodging, toll fees, and any additional fuel charges beyond the first tank of gas.
Car rental agencies usually require a driveaway driver to be at least 25 years old with a clean driving record. You may need to put in a cash deposit of about several hundred dollars which will be refunded once you bring the car to its final destination.
The policy of this cheap car rental usually requires you to do no more than eight hours of driving per day. You’ll be given enough time to make several rest stops, eat meals, and do some sightseeing. And it still follows a lot of the same policies present in regular car rentals. Conditions such as who are the permitted drivers, the amount of luggage and gear you’re allowed to bring, and penalties for late delivery are usually stated in a driveaway policy. You may also be required to check in with the car rental agency on the phone to let them know you’re on schedule.
If you’re the type of person who is flexible, wants to save money, and enjoys impromptu vacations, then a driveaway option could be just for you. Because we all know that if there’s anything better than a cheap car rental, it’s a free car rental.
